Tappan Zee Bridge Project

Large Steel Manufacturer Seeks Logistics Support

Red Arrow Logistics was selected to assist with the transportation of pipe that will be used for the support system on the new suspension bridge in New York, the Tappan Zee Bridge.

The Tappan Zee Bridge Project is the largest bridge and highway infrastructure project in North America and will replace the current bridge. The current bridge, which was built during 1952 – 1955, was only designed to last 50 years, initially only supporting 40,000 vehicles per day. Now, 138,000 vehicles cross the deteriorating structure each day. The new bridge will be designed to handle a larger capacity of vehicles per day and last 100 years.

Tappan Zee Bridge Project Case Study | Red Arrow LogisticsTransportation of Steel Pipe to Manufacturer

Red Arrow Logistics transported unfinished metal pipe from a manufacturing warehouse in Houston, TX to a facility in Point of Rocks, MD, where the metal pipe was refinished and scoped to size. The total shipment consisted of 190 pieces of pipe, each piece varying in size – from 6 foot long to 24 feet long – and weight – 1500lbs to 8100 lbs. Red Arrow enlisted flatbeds to transport the 25 loads of unfinished metal pipe almost 1400 miles to their facility in Point of Rocks, MD, where each piece of pipe was offloaded with forklifts.

The project involved detailed project planning including scheduling the correct equipment needed for the move, identifying the best transportation routes from origin to job site, and coordinating between all parties involved at the job site to ensure successful delivery to the job site. The bridge support materials arrived on time and on budget.
